Home Care Worker
Support people to live independently in their own homes, one of the fastest-growing areas in care.
What You Will Do
As a home care worker, you will visit clients in their own homes to provide personal care, help with household tasks, and support them to maintain their daily routines. It is independent work, you are often the only worker there, and it requires judgement, reliability, and strong communication skills.
We train our students specifically for home-based settings. The work is different from residential care, you are a guest in someone's home, and we teach you how to navigate that relationship professionally.
Your day might include helping with showers and dressing, preparing meals, light housework, medication reminders, accompanying clients to appointments, and providing companionship. We cover all of these skills in our training, plus the specific considerations for working in someone's home.
The Demand
Home care is where the sector is heading. Government policy is shifting towards "ageing in place", supporting people to stay in their own homes as long as possible, rather than moving into residential care. That means more home care workers, and more demand for the skills we teach.
The new Support at Home program, launching in 2025, will further expand home-based services. We are preparing our students for this shift, the skills are in demand now, and they will be even more valuable in the years ahead.
Pay and Conditions
Home care workers are typically covered by the Aged Care Award or the SCHADS Award. Travel time between clients is usually paid, and many employers provide a vehicle or mileage reimbursement.
The work offers a lot of autonomy. You are managing your own time, moving between clients, and making decisions independently. We help our students understand what that looks like in practice, both the benefits and the challenges.
